Climate fiction author Andrew Dana Hudson is coming to Left Bank Books

Author and Illinois native Andrew Dana Hudson is coming to St. Louis this week to promote his newest book, Our Shared Storm. The speculative novel combines elements of fiction and non-fiction to present readers with five alternate climate realities based on research and climate-modeling scenarios. Set in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2054, the novel follows a set of characters who, depending on the political, economic, and cultural possibilities theorized by climate research, pass through different challenges. Hudson says the book is not meant to communicate an overly positive or negative outlook, but rather a straightforward dive into various climate possibilities.

Hudson, who spent his high school years in St. Louis, says that when it came time to plan events for the release of Our Shared Storm, Left Bank Books felt like a natural fit. The author's visit on June 16 marks one of the first in-store events for Left Bank since March 2020, and store event coordinator Shane Mullen says readers will appreciate the unique view of the novel, especially with the increasing popularity of climate fiction, or “cli-fi.”

Hudson, who is also a sustainability researcher and narrative strategist in addition to being an author, plans to share his inspirations for the book, read excerpts, answer questions, and have a general discussion with the attending audiences. “Anyone who is interested in climate change, energy policy, or just wants to learn about it should definitely come,” he says.

Left Bank will also provide a virtual attendance option, which Mullen hopes will maximize accessibility. “We are trying to reach not just an audience in St. Louis that can make it to our store, but also to people who want to join from the comfort of wherever they are,” he says. “We believe that author events are a fun way to experience literature in a very meaningful way by hearing a little bit more about the author's experience writing the book.”

Those interested can attend in person at Left Bank Books (399 North Euclid) or virtually through the store's Facebook or YouTube pages. The event begins June 16 at 7 p.m., and both in-person and virtual audiences will have the opportunity to ask questions.
